Nerf Turret-Inspired Garden Guardian: Computer Vision & IoT Monkey Deterrence (FYP)

Muhammad Ammar Yaseer Bin Azizan has successfully completed an innovative Final Year Project at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor Bahru, titled “NERF Turret-Inspired Garden Guardian: Computer Vision & IoT Monkey Deterrence.”
This project showcases Ammar’s dedication to leveraging technology for practical solutions, specifically designed to protect his father’s harum manis garden from monkey intrusions in a humane manner. The project integrates advanced robotics, computer vision, and IoT technologies to create a robust and effective deterrence system.
The Garden Guardian is an advanced robotic system designed to protect gardens from monkey intrusions using a humane deterrence mechanism. This project, developed by Muhammad Ammar Yaseer Bin Azizan, leverages cutting-edge technology to ensure effective and non-harmful deterrence.
Key Features:
Robotic System: Powered by Raspberry Pi 5 and Arduino Uno R4, the system is equipped with a 30W speaker and TDA7266 amplifier to emit sounds that deter monkeys.
Movement Tracking: Utilizes MG996 180-degree servo motors, controlled by the PCA9685 PWM module, to track monkey movements both vertically and horizontally.
Real-Time Monitoring: A web interface developed with the Flask framework facilitates real-time monitoring. Secure access is ensured through user registration and login, with notifications sent via email and WhatsApp when a monkey is detected for more than three seconds.
Hardware Components:
Design and Fabrication: The robot’s base and head are designed using SolidWorks and fabricated through metal bending, with 3D-printed covers made from PLA material.
User Interface: Features three buttons for controlling the robot’s functions—power on, manual mode, and AI mode—with an additional button for toggling motion detection.
Future Enhancements:
Optimization: Plans to optimize YOLOv5 models for edge devices like Raspberry Pi.
Patrol Capabilities: Exploring the integration of ROS for broader coverage.
Enhanced Deterrence: Considering the addition of a water gun for improved deterrence.
Ammar’s project reflects his commitment to continuous learning and innovation.
